01/06/07 Thank you to hundreds of volunteers who help make Gingerbread: The National Council for One Parent Families a success...
Friday 1st - Thursday 7th June 2007 is Volunteers' Week and Gingerbread: The National Council for One Parent Families would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who have made a difference to lone parent families through their support of local Gingerbread groups.

Specific thanks go to: - John Thomas (aged 73 in November 2006) - he has been involved with Gingerbread for 28 plus years. Initially, as a full active member, but then as a support member. At a time when he could have faded into the background and done what he wanted, he has selflessly continued to support Gingerbread locally, regionally and nationally. He has written lots of fundraising letters, has helped with a variety of fundraising events, (for example, street collections, sponsored cycles) and information days. He has traveled around the country, sometimes with a knapsack on his back, bags and suitcases to provide childcare facilities at Gingerbread events. However, what is not seen by lone parents, children and staff of Gingerbread is the hard work that is done behind the scenes in the preparation of plaster cast models (1000s have been made), photocopying, designing and making other arts and crafts samples, that children of all ages can make. All of us who know him would like to give him a big thank you and let him know how much he is appreciated.

 - Carol Revell has been active with Gingerbread since joining in 1988. She has been on her group committee, the Wales Regional Committee and the National Council ( as a trustee). She has also been Chair of the Trustees. She has helped in many fundraising activities, information days/training days, arranging outings, regional/national events and holidays, even though she works full time and has very little spare time. She also spends a lot of time designing arts and crafts for the children to make when we provide childcare facilities at events and she also helps out on a voluntary basis in the childcare facilities that we provide. She continues to give 100% even though she could take a back seat and do what she wanted to do.

 - Thanks to Marcella Silverman at Harrow Gingerbread. Marcella takes a lead role in running the Harrow group and without Marcella, the group would not be in existence. She is vibrant, friendly and enthusiastic. She rings the members regularly to make sure they are aware of events and meetings, and makes sure the committee is aware of what they need to do. Her friendliness and enthusiasm is contagious, and you can see how much everyone enjoys the group. The kids respect her and adore her, and this makes for a very successful group.

 - Linda Kail is a member of Havering Gingerbread and during the last year she took over the role of Leader for the Teen Project and put a lot of behind the scenes work in. On top of that, this year she has stepped up to the plate again to take over the role of Treasurer to enable the important committee roles to be filled.

 - Thanks to Del Buckinham of Havering Gingerbread who has been in charge of arranging trips and keeping the minibus on the road and constantly transporting people around the country, at times under great duress. Without him some families would not have had a trip out.

 - Thanks as well to Jill Holmyard of Havering Gingerbread who is always there to run around in the background making new kids welcome and looking after their welfare and always happy to be a voice of reason.

 - Thank you to Sandra Houlton of Muswell Gingerbead who does fundraising for the group as well as taking on some of the secretarial duties in addition to her official role of treasurer. The group endeavours to do its best and feels that Sandra is owed many thanks.

 - The members of South Trafford Gingerbread would like to thank their entire committee, both old and new, for the amount of work that they put in, with special thanks to Donna O'Toole, Jane Flaherty, Debbie Manis, Craig Madden, and Michael Carr.

 - We would also like to thank the Wales Regional Committee and particularly its Chair, Margaret O'Sullivan. The Wales Regional Committee has offered support voluntarily to groups across Wales.

 - We would also like to thank all of those members who have contributed towards running a group (or indeed attempting to start a group) in England and Wales, including group committee members and those individuals who have contributed to the running and organisation of the groups without holding specific positions.

We are very grateful for all of your hard work and dedication in giving other lone parents the opportunity to have a network of support in their area.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH INDEED!
