Lone parent charity welcomes investment in children in poorest families

10/10/07 Lone parent charity One Parent Families|Gingerbread welcomes the Chancellor's Pre Budget Report announcement of a significant increase in the amount of child maintenance that parents on benefits can keep before their benefits are reduced.

Chief Executive of the Charity, Chris Pond, said:

"We are glad that in a tight spending round the Chancellor has been able to invest in the poorest children. Enabling parents to keep more of the child maintenance they receive is the right thing to do and a change we have long campaigned for. We are particularly pleased that parents will feel the benefit of this from 2008."

"However, while a commitment to tackling child poverty has been expressed today, the new, higher child maintenance disregard will need to be followed by more investment if the Government is to meet its 2010 child poverty reduction target. All eyes will now turn towards the Budget".

Notes to editors:

The Chancellor announced that the amount of child maintenance that parents receiving income related benefits can keep will increase from £10 at present, to £20 from 2008, to £40 in 2010. Previously the Government had announced that it would 'significantly increase' the disregard from 2010/11.

Estimates prepared for a Parliamentary Question suggested that an increase in the disregard to £40 would lift 40-50,000 children out of poverty. Estimates suggest that approximately 1 million children will need to be lifted out of poverty to meet the 2010 target.

One Parent Families|Gingerbread alongside six other major charities wrote to the Chancellor on the eve of the Pre-Budget Report to ask him to substantially increase the disregard.
