New research shows women and children lose out in divorce

05/03/08 Drawing attention to research published today showing that women with children see substantial drops in their income after separation or divorce, single parent family charity One Parent Families|Gingerbread called for more action to help tackle poverty in one parent families.

Head of Policy and Research Kate Bell said:

"This research shows that - for women looking after children - accusations that parents do well out of separating are wide of the mark. For such women and the children who live with them, divorce or separation too often means a leap into poverty, with income falling by an average of 12 per cent.

This helps explain the fact that half of children living in one parent families are still poor. We need to hear less about the phantom financial incentives to separation for women looking after children and more about how to tackle the poverty they all too often face when raising children alone."
