Budget 2008 makes child poverty a priority

12/03/08 Single parent charity One Parent Families|Gingerbread, a member of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, has welcomed Alastair Darling's first Budget which puts tackling child poverty at its heart and keeps the 2010 target to halve child poverty within sight.

In particular the charity welcomes the measures to:
  • Bring forward the increase in Child Benefit;
  • Increase Child Tax Credit; and
  • help make work pay for those claiming Housing Benefit

Head of Policy and Research Kate Bell said:

"Lone parents will welcome the fact that Alastair Darling's first Budget has made tackling poverty a priority. The extra investment in Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit will make a real difference to the lives of the 1.5 million children in one parent families struggling to make ends meet.

"The measures to help more families with their housing costs when they move into employment are particularly welcome, and will help make work pay for more lone parents.

"These are welcome changes which bring us an important step nearer to meeting the 2010 target but as a member of the Campaign to End Child Poverty we will be looking to the Chancellor to keep up the pace."

Notes to Editors:

One Parent Families|Gingerbread is one of over 100 member organisations of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, campaigning for public and political commitment to ensure the goals of halving child poverty by 2010 and ending child poverty by 2020 are met.
