One Parent Families|Gingerbread helps parents on benefit keep their child maintenance

22/07/08 After months of intensive lobbying led by One Parent Families|Gingerbread, we're delighted that the Government has announced that single parents on income support will be able to keep all of any child maintenance they receive, on top of their benefit, from 2010.
The change, announced in the Welfare Reform Green Paper, will mean an extra 30,000 children in one parent families will be lifted out of poverty. It should also encourage more non-residents parents to pay up - since the money will go straight to their children - and, we hope, will improve efficiency at the CSA (and C-MEC, the organisation that will succeed it) since it will be simpler to administrate than the current partial disregard.
Our lobbying for the change involved co-ordinating a range of charities and other organisations - including Child Poverty Action Group, Citizens Advice Bureau, Barnardo's, National Children's Bureau and Resolution. We continually pressed Ministers and officials at the Department for Work and Pensions and the Treasury about the difference the change could make to thousands of one parent families.
See the press release on the Welfare Reform Green Paper for further information.
