Statistics on tax credit overpayments, 2004-05

HMRC have published their statistics for the year 2004-05.

Some key points are:
  • Almost two million claims (1,958,000) were overpaid a total of £1.7 billion. This equates to a third of all claims being overpaid and is similar to the figure for 2003-04.
  • The average overpayment for 2004-5 was £866, down from £1,028 in 2003-04.
  • If you include underpayments as well as overpayments, 2,864,000 families were paid the incorrect amount of tax credits in 2004-05.
