Martina Cole joins us as an ambassador for One Parent Families|Gingerbread

Martina Cole, the international bestselling author, has become One Parent Families|Gingerbread's' latest ambassador. She joins a distinguished group of high-profile supporters, including J K Rowling, John Amaechi, Lisa Aziz, Kate Fawkes, Neil Pearson, Tracy Edwards and Arabella Weir, all of whom have either experienced lone parenthood or been raised in a lone parent household. Ambassadors work closely with One Parent Families|Gingerbread to promote the needs of the UK's 1.9 million lone parents, effect changes in government policy and public opinion, and raise funds to provide direct help, information and support to lone parents and their children.

Martina understands what it's like to be a single mum - she has raised both her daughter Freddie-Mary, aged nine and her son Chris, now 29 (who she had when she was just 18), alone.

Martina says, "I am delighted to become an ambassador for One Parent Families|Gingerbread. There remains a huge stigma attached to being a single parent, and I want to help One Parent Families as they work to break down stereotypes. Lone parents shouldn't be vilified; they should be supported as they try to do the best they can for their children in often difficult circumstances."

Chris Pond, chief executive of One Parent Families|Gingerbread, said, "We are thrilled that Martina has agreed to join us in giving a voice to those bringing up children on their own. I have no doubt she will prove to be a great asset in promoting our work, both as an advocate for much-needed social change and as an inspirational role model."
