Annual Review 2006/07
There are 1.9 million lone parents bringing up over 3.1 million children in Britain today - that is one in four families. Shockingly, half of these families are living in poverty; as a family group they are the poorest in the country, twice as poor as single pensioners.

That is why we are still needed in 2007. For we believe that wherever there is a one parent family there is a child who does not deserve to be poor or stigmatised, a child who deserves to be raised with the same love and attention and receive exactly the same chances in life as any other child.

The facts and figures on the following pages show how those beliefs continue to shape the work we do - supporting thousands of lone parents directly each year through our helpline and advice services, providing an effective voice for lone parents in our policy and research work, and offering our expertise to a wide range of professional and corporate partners in their work with lone parent families.

Alongside these activities, we worked during the year towards something momentous - a joining of forces with Gingerbread. This bringing together of the UK's two leading lone parent charities, as One Parent Families|Gingerbread, gives us the opportunity to provide a louder voice and a better range of services to lone parent families, and why we will continue to support them in all the ways outlined in these pages.

During the period of this review, One Parent Families continued to benefit from the expertise and generosity of its Board of Trustees, chaired by Suzanna Taverne. Her commitment and generous support has been much appreciated. We are also very happy to announce the appointment of Martina Cole as an Ambassador for the charity.

We would like to thank all of the staff, volunteers and supporters of the charity, whose commitment, energy and hard work enables us to make change happen for lone parents and their families.

With your support, we canmake that change even more effective.

  J.K. Rowling OBE, President
